An 81-year-old Catholic priest living in northern Indiana faces possible extradition to Ireland on charges that he raped a teenage boy in 1968.

A federal magistrate on Tuesday ordered that the Rev. Francis Markey remain jailed pending extradition proceedings. U.S. marshals arrested Markey at his South Bend home.

When the magistrate asked Markey whether he had any questions, he responded "I'm at a loss" and that he's had a stroke.

The Irish charges against Markey allege he raped a 15-year-old boy during a religious pilgrimage in County Donegal and again after his father's funeral in County Galway.

The magistrate set a Nov. 16 hearing to give Markey time to hire a lawyer.

The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend and the University of Notre Dame say Markey isn't affiliated with them.
