Innocuous Fukushima Radiation to Hit West Coast in April

Scientists have revealed that radiations from Japan's damaged Fukushima nuclear reactors will reach the West Coast in April. But, there is no need to worry as scientists have predicted that the levels of the radiation will not be high enough to pose any threats to humans and the environment.

It is just a matter of month when the low levels of radiation will reach ocean waters along the United States' West Coast. It is a result of drift of fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster across the Pacific Ocean.

The radiation levels, though predicted to be innocuous, have sparked concerns for increased monitoring as federal agencies have not previously tested effects of radiations on Pacific Coast seawater.

It all began in 2011 when tsunami was triggered by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake with waves as high as 133 feet off the coast of Japan. More than 15,000 people were killed and 6,000 were injured in a major catastrophe in Japan.

Also, it led to power cuts at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant complex. As a result, meltdowns were induced at three reactors and leakage led contaminated water to reach the ocean.

Scientists have said that their models indicate that north of Seattle will receive the contaminated water first and then the West coast in April.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. admitted for the first time in July last year that the reactor released contaminated water into the ocean because of leakage.

It was showed in a report presented last week at a conference of the American Geophysical Union's Ocean Sciences Section that some Cesium 134 has already made its way to Canada, in the Gulf of Alaska area.

'Kelp Watch 2014' - launched by Cal State Long Beach marine biologist Steven Manley - is intended to monitor kelp all along the West Coast for Fukushima radiation.
