FDA: Some chicken may contain arsenic....WTF

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration says some chicken meat may contain small amounts of arsenic, though the agency is stressing that the amount is too tiny to be dangerous to people who eat it.

The FDA said Wednesday that a new study by the agency shows that an ingredient in chicken feed that contains arsenic, called Roxarsone, may make its way into parts of the bird that are eaten. Previous studies have indicated the arsenic was eliminated with chicken waste.

Pfizer, which makes the feed ingredient, said Wednesday that it will pull it off the market in the United States. The FDA said it would be banned because it is a carcinogen.

Many poultry producers have already stopped feeding their birds the ingredient, which was used to kill parasites and promote growth.

I've used roxarsone from time to time through the years as a treatment for coccidiosis in racing pigeons. Cocci attacks the digestive system so birds may eat but cannot take in any nutrients. We call it "going light." Birds starve and metabolize their own flesh until they are just a skeleton and die. Treated birds are active, eat more, and perform well in the races. They feed their young the same water they drink. I've never noticed any harm done to their tiny young. The report states that inorganic arsenic was found in the livers of some chickens. This is not good news for chicken liver lovers I suppose, but how do they blame roxarsone. There are other sources of arsenic in nature. If they ban this stuff will we be having Double down chicken bone beaks and feet sandwiches? How about an article that isn't just fear mongering?
