I got the below information in an email, so I thought I would share.

THIS IS GOOD INFO TO KNOW, AND A NECESSITY TO KNOW, IF YOU'RE CONCERNED ABOUT HUMAN FOOD, OR OTHER ITEMS, ORIGINATING IN CHINA, I.E., CAT FOOD, DOG FOOD, AND RELATED THINGS.

The first 3 digits of a bar code is the country code wherein the product was made. You might wish to print out the bar code below and keep it with you when you go grocery shopping

All bar codes that start with 690, 691, 692 until 695 are Made in China. Hershey's moved their operation from PA to China, Cadberry is made in China (and was found to have unacceptable chemical substitutes recently), baby formulas, etc., etc.

China knows consumers are leery of products 'made in China' so, Chinese products (food, medicine, etc.) generally no longer show the country of manufacture.

One may now refer to the bar code, remember if the first 3 digits is 690-695 then it is Made in China .

49 ~ JAPAN
50 ~ UK
57 ~ Denmark
64 ~ Finland
76 ~ Switzerland and Liechtenstein
471 ~ Taiwan

628 ~ Saudi-Arabia
629 ~ United Arab Emirates
690, 691, 692 to 695 ~ China
740 ~ 745 - Central America

April thank you for posting this info. I'm going to save this and also pass it on.

I may be goofy on this, but wasn't there some complaint last year about stuff being made in China, then shipped to europe, and the coded in the european country? I could be completely offbase on this, but this thread just struck a note for me.

That's what I was trying to remember. The barcode doesn't always show nation of origin.
