Released: Journalist Peter Theo CurtisAn American journalist who had been held captive for almost two years after being snatched near the Syrian border has been freed.

Peter Theo Curtis, of Boston, was handed over to UN representatives today just days after fellow US reporter James Foley was beheaded by the Islamic State group.


Curtis was abducted in Antakya, Turkey, in October 2012 where he planned to enter Syria.


His captors had released footage of Curtis on June 30 showing him dishevelled although healthy.


He spoke to give his name, where he was from and a prepared statement.

“Everything has been perfect, food, clothing, even friends now,” he said.
Curtis added he was being well treated and “had everything” he needed.
