The four ISIS gunmen used a machine gun and mortar ineffectually in their first ever attack on the occupied Golan Heights.
But the jihadis - believed to be a group called Shuhada al-Yarmouk affiliated to ISIS - were quickly obliterated as Israel snuffed out attack with massive air-power.

Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner, from the Israel Defence Force, confirmed the soldiers were from the Golani Brigade and were ambushed by machine gun and mortar fire.

Nitzan Nuriel, a retired Israeli general, said: “A direct attack like that on Israeli activities on the Israeli side of the border - this is the first time.
“They know exactly what the Israeli response would be.

“An Israeli front is the last thing ISIS needs at this stage.”
The attack led by ISIS affiliated fighters were the first Israel had experienced since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

General Nuriel, a former director of Israel’s Counter Terrorism Bureau, said the attack could not have been ordered by the ISIS leader Bu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Instead, the attacks were instigated by “local hotheads”.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated his soldiers who “successfully repelled an attempted attack on the convergence point of three borders”.

He added: “Our forces are prepared on our northern border, and we won’t let ISIS elements or other hostile elements use the cover of the war in Syria to establish themselves next to our borders.”

Sources have said that the Israeli army holds the Syrian government accountable for all attacks occurring from its territory, regardless of the source.
