Revealed: UK’s first official sharia courts

ISLAMIC law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

The government has quietly sanctioned the powers for sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence.

Rulings issued by a network of five sharia courts are enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through the county courts or High Court.

Previously, the rulings of sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance among Muslims.

It has now emerged that sharia courts with these powers have been set up in London, Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester with the network’s headquarters in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Two more courts are being planned for Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Sheikh Faiz-ul-Aqtab Siddiqi, whose Muslim Arbitration Tribunal runs the courts, said he had taken advantage of a clause in the Arbitration Act 1996.

Under the act, the sharia courts are classified as arbitration tribunals. The rulings of arbitration tribunals are binding in law, provided that both parties in the dispute agree to give it the power to rule on their case.

Siddiqi said: “We realised that under the Arbitration Act we can make rulings which can be enforced by county and high courts. The act allows disputes to be resolved using alternatives like tribunals. This method is called alternative dispute resolution, which for Muslims is what the sharia courts are.â€

What? They gonna go back to beheadings and stonings?

This is the kind of question that has to be posed to all presidential candidates as they will be one day charged with appointing members to the Supreme Court.

Utter insanity. Doesn't look like the UK is going to stay very European much longer. What a bunch of total wimps.

Fools. They go from civilized and educated to the return of dark ages and they do it by choice? The foot was in the door, now the 'guest' is involved with the household. Next step... take-over (and they don't deny that this is their aim). Fools.

They are confusing religious and secular courts. I've met abuse victims here whose husbands were acting under what they thought was 'patriarchical' religious authority, and the women though that separation of church and state meant they couldn't do anything. A woman who is, for example, an Orthodox Jew can get a secular divorce and force a property settlement. That her religion may still consider her married until her husband grants her a religious divorce doesn't change her civil rights outside of that religion. If you are Catholic or many conservative branches of Protestant, and you divorce and remarry while your first spouse is still alive, you may face a frowny face in church, but there is nothing they can do about it outside. Likewise, your inheritance is governed by wills and probate court. In Indonesia, there are allegations of faked deathbed conversions to Islam by elderly with assets, in which cases their courts will enforce Sharia law which prohibits a non-Muslim from inheriting from a Muslim. So, a father who wanted to pass his farm or store to his son may have it taken and given to a distant Muslim cousin. That could not happen here, but might in the UK if this story means what it seems to.

Britain has started down a very slippery slope. I like our approach better.
