Whilst both major candidates for a premier are a duo ala Obama versus McCain there are two key small parties: Lega Nord and La Destra: and they could block Italian McCain from his ill-advised plans as he needs them to govern.

La Destra: A far-right group that splintered from the mainstream rightist National Alliance party. It is running on a platform of zero-tolerance for crime and anti-immigrant policies as well as against EU membership for Turkey.

Daniela Santanche, a 47-year-old businesswoman and lawmaker, is running for premier, while The Right's other leader, 49-year-old Francesco Storace, a former health minister in Berlusconi's government, is running for mayor of Rome.
