Johnston elections director resigns over missing funds

  SMITHFIELD (AP) – The Johnston County elections di*rector resigned Friday after an investigation linked her to missing cash from the office – more than $6,000 over five years.
  County attorney Mark Payne said Teresa Davis, who had been director since 1998, was expected to begin repay*ing the money soon. He said his office would notify the county prosecutor.
  An internal investigation showed the missing money in*cluded filing fees from candi*dates and notary fees.
  Deputy director Leigh Anne Price was selected as in*terim director while the coun*ty elections board decides on a permanent replacement for Davis.
  Davis was paid about $52,000 a year and had experi*enced financial problems, fil*ing for bankruptcy last year.
