Kanye West causes controversy over slavery comments on TMZ

Kanye West calls 400-years of slavery 'a choice' after expressing support for President Trump; Adam Housley reports from Los Angeles.

A Detroit radio station said it will ban Kanye West's music over controversial comments the rapper made earlier this week that slavery “was a choice.”

Hosts Shay Shay and BiGG of 105.1 the Morning Bounce made the announcement Thursday on Facebook with the hashtag “Mute Kanye.”

“Kanye has gone too far” with his latest comments, they said. They wrote that they are refusing to give him a platform,” according to New York Post.

"We don't want to hear Kanye's music, we don't want to play Kanye on our show, we don't want to talk about Kanye anymore,” the post read. “So we are taking a stand and we aren't playing his music anymore; we just are refusing to give him a platform."

The ban will be for the entire hip-hop station and will include tracks that West produced or is featured in as well, the Detroit Free Press reported.

West faced swift backlash following an interview with TMZ on Tuesday, where he said "when you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice."

The music mogul took to Twitter shortly after to try and walk back his comments and compared himself to both Nat Turner and Harriet Tubman.

"when you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice."
    - Kanye West

“If this was 148 years ago I would have been more like Harriet or Nat," West tweeted, before clarifying the reason he “brought up the 400 years point is because we can’t be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years. We need free thought now. Even the statement was an example of free thought…It was just an idea.”

The two morning DJs didn’t announce how long the ban will last, and left it open to a “gut feeling.”

“That’s what it is right now. We need a break,” Shay Shay, told the paper. “I think it’s a gut feeling of when we’ll be able to feel comfortable playing it again, when we’ll want to hear it again, and more importantly, when will our listeners want to hear it again.”

West was banned from a Hot 103.5 in Sacramento in 2016 after he attacked radio stations and fellow artists during a concert for his Saint Pablo Tour, USA Today reported.

I'm surprised they would do this, ban Kanye? Why? Isn't rap all about saying whatever you want however you want? I've never been into rap but know it's very popular and from what I have listened to there's no free speech restriction at all, so why would rap radio stations ban Kanye for a comment he made? I don't agree with his comment, but I think he was trying to be provocative and start a discussion about it being over.

This whole Kanye thing is not about Trump, per se.

Let it be known that I don't claim to know everything or that I am any kind of expert.

Think about when Obama was running for president. Farrakhan and Jeremiah Wright both gave Obama their endorsement.
Seeing that Farrakhan had history and controversy, Obama quickly rejected Farrakhan's endorsement and later
he also rejected Pastor Wright's endorsement.

Trump was endorsed by David Duke and Jared Taylor. Yet Trump wavered and generally failed to put those people on notice. Later Trump might have given a half-hearted rebuff but it was often late and weak. Why would white nationalist be drawn to Trump is what I am wondering? Some say "dog whistling" and denial while others say it's because Trump wants to use them for his political benefit. Who really knows 100%?

Here's another way to look at it:
You think you are generally a good person. People in you community think you are generally a good person. The local "do gooder" organization wants to give you an award for your outstanding volunteer work. You get awards from your church and your local law enforcement honors your neighborhood watch group. You are everyone's favorite person. Then The Loyal Knights of the Ku Klux Klan wants to give you an award to. They throw a parade in your honor. It would make me uncomfortable if the KKK tried to give me any praise. Yet Donald wouldn't come down hard against people that were racist and supported him.

In conclusion, Trump may have disavowed them but that isn't the real problem. The real problem lies in the reason white nationalist were drawn to him in the first place. i don't remember white nationalist coming out strong for Romney or McCain but Trump seemed to drag them out in undeniable numbers. So, while some people may not like Trump for his political stance, others see Trump as giving a voice to clear and known racists.

Kanye, in many people's eyes, is choosing to "rub elbows" with the worst Americans: white nationalists. And that will not be tolerated in the hip hop movement because there shouldn't be racism in hip hop. Latinos and blacks did many things together in the rap world. Crazy Legs was one of the fathers of break dance and he was Puerto Rican. The Real Roxanne (right) is a Puerto Rican woman that sold many records battling a black woman, Roxanne Shante (left) over who would be the Queen of Rap. The list goes on and on. But there was no room for racism and Kanye doesn't seem to understand that.

I'm getting sleepy but one more thing:
Black people and Latinos are both not riding unicorns and eating Skittles together. But the art of hip hop is against racism and that is what I was referring to earlier.

Trump may not be racist but he sure knows how to make racists excited and optimistic about the U.S.A..

    About the radio:

I agree with the radio station's ban. He is free to have his views but he can have those views on a platform that shares his views.
Do you think it's time for a Kanye/David Allen Coe song to be made?

    LOL

Oh, okay, I thought he was banned because of his comment on slavery.

White nationalists are territorial, so they like Trump because he wants to secure our borders and protect our trade. They know he's not racist.

I have not listened to this interview but I can tell what the left is doing by reading this article.

I doubt Kanye West said slavery was a choice. He was probably referring to the current mental slavery blacks chose to accept from the Democrats and socialists and they are twisting what he said as the left always does.

The media has lost most of their credibility so I don't doubt that this story could be inaccurate.
