The New York Daily News reported the 30-year-old dictator on Christmas Eve visited a Korean People’s Army command center in the western port city of Nampo, telling a unit there that the military must bolster its strength and be ready for combat.
“He instructed the unit to put utmost spurs on rounding off its combat readiness … always bearing in mind that a war breaks our without any prior notice,” according to the state run news agency.
The developments follow a report from the U.S.-Korea Institute SAIS that satellite photos show North Korea is ramping up activity at a recently restarted plutonium reactor. The report says North Korea has two operating nuclear reactors and one nearing completion.
Kim’s actions have caused consternation in both China and the United States, not to mention South Korea, where officials are concerned about his ability to lead the country. The New York Times reported that Kim’s decision to have his once-powerful uncle Jang Song-thaek executed sprang from a gun battle between Jang’s supporters and those of the regime over controlling key fishing grounds. Kim’s forces were routed, infuriating the North Korean leader who responded by ordering the execution of his uncle’s two aides. The aides were killed by anti-aircraft machine guns instead of rifles.
Not only that, the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Kim was drunk when he ordered the executions of Jang’s aides.
Jang’s execution startled many observers of North Korea. Wrote The Times: “Only a few months ago Mr. Jang was believed to be the second most powerful man in North Korea. In fact, American intelligence agencies had reported to the White House and the State Department in late 2011 that he could well be running the country behind the scenes — and might edge out his inexperienced nephew for control. In part that was based on his deep relationship with top officials in China, as well as his extensive business connections there.”
