(Newser) – One of the more notable prisoners at Guantanamo Bay is no longer a detainee there. Toronto native Omar Khadr was flown back to Canada this morning to serve out the remainder of his term, reports the Toronto Sun. Khadr was the last Westerner held at Gitmo, notes Reuters, but his case had made headlines previously because the 26-year-old was convicted for crimes committed as a 15-year-old juvenile.

After his capture in 2002, Khadr admitted killing US Army medic Christopher Speer in a firefight, as well as helping al-Qaeda by spying and making roadside bombs. He struck a plea deal in 2010 to serve an additional eight years on those charges, though he is expected to be released before 2018. His departure from Guantanamo leaves about 160 prisoners there.
