WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- State tax officials have gotten good at collecting, but not so good at paying.

Officials mistakenly gave 375 law enforcement agencies nearly $2.5 million that should have gone to North Carolina's schools. The money comes from a state tax on illegal drugs.
Legislators are demanding that the money be paid back. Revenue Department spokeswoman Kim Brooks said the error was an oversight.
The largest overpayment was more than $340,000 to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. The smallest was 13 cents to the police department in Andrews.
Drugs, moonshine and other illegal substances taken during investigations are taxed.
Police frequently seize property such as real estate and vehicles to pay the tax.
