Dear Ms. XXXXXX:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Electronic Employment Verification Reauthorization Act of 2008 (S. 3093), of which I am a cosponsor. I value the opinions of every Nevadan and am always grateful to those who take the time to inform me of their views.

America is a nation of immigrants but also a nation of laws. Our immigration policy must demand accountability from those who hire illegal workers by having a national employee verification system that employers would be required to use to verify the legal status of their employees.

As you may know, the Electronic Employment Verification Reauthorization Act would make the E-Verify Program permanent. This would give every employer the ability to check the immigrant status of existing employees and new hires alike.

Additionally, this bill would require that all federal government contractors use the E-Verify Program to check the immigrant status of their employees while also requiring employers of temporary workers to reverify each time that an individual is rehired. Furthermore, S. 3093 would create a pilot project to increase the ability of small businesses and rural areas without internet access to take advantage of the E-Verify Program.

You may be interested to know that I supported the passage of the pilot E-Verify Program in 1996 and its reauthorization in 2001 and 2003. I support these principles and look forward to addressing this proposal when the Senate debates immigration reform in the future.

The Electronic Employment Verification Reauthorization Act has been referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, of which I am not a member. Please be assured that, should the full Senate consider this immigration legislation, I will keep your views and the views of all Nevadans in mind.

Once again, thank you for contacting me on this very important issue. If you should have any further questions or comments, please feel free to write or e-mail me via my website at http://ensign.senate.gov.

Sincerely,

JOHN ENSIGN
United States Senator
