What communism did to the population was make them dependent on it with no reason to strive for anything better. It got so bad the Soviet regimes had to pay the workers a bonus for just showing up to work. The populace stole everything they could from the workplaces, just as they had seen the government takes their homes, lands and businesses with the drive for nationalization. The black market was alive and well, and reading a magazine on a flight to Finland, the cover story in 1996 was how to deal with the Russian mafia when opening a business in Russia. Forty percent of businesses were mafia owned.
