    Nineteen arrested in Highland HUD sweep

    A sweep targeting people suspected of defrauding affordable housing programs netted 19 arrests in Highland on Wednesday.

    San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies arrested eight people on suspicion of grand theft from a housing program. Another 11 people were arrested for other charges such as violating parole, drug and weapons violations.

    Deputies worked with a number of county and federal entities including the District Attorney's Office, the Department of Social Services and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

    They served search warrants for people identified as fraud suspects, hoping to remove unauthorized people from housing programs to make room for law-abiding people who are waiting to receive housing.

    What I'd like to know is HOW they determined who the "unauthorized" people committing the fraud are?

    Did they check by social security numbers? Employers? Marriage records? What personal information did they go digging for? We all know they sure as hell didn't check legal status, don't we?
