What’s New With Daylight Savings Time? Posted 2007-02-27

    By Ron Doyle

Since 1987, Daylight Savings Time ran from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. If you are a perfectionist you got up at 2 a.m. on those dates and set your clocks an hour ahead or back, respectively.
The “Energy Policy Act of 2005” put changes into effect. Starting in March 2007, most of the United States will be changing over to new dates. The changes will now be required on the second Sunday of March (March 11) through the first Sunday in November (Nov. 4).
There is some real doubt if daylight savings actually results in a net energy savings. Let’s just say I am suspicious and of course the Democrats and Republicans tend to disagree … so what’s new?
Now you may be thinking, so what?! I just have to remember the new dates and go on about my business. Don’t panic, this isn’t a threat like some of you thought for the new millennium. The worst-case scenario here is that you will be late for church that Sunday morning or possibly miss a flight if you don’t update. You may also miss a few meetings for a couple of weeks. Of course, you will be early for activities a couple of weeks later in the year.
A few problems may occur as some electronic clocks have pre-programmed dates that they use to adjust DST. This change “could” make them unusable for several weeks each year. The one that concerns computer users should be that some computer operating systems may require manual updating.
If you have updated your Microsoft operating systems as you should have been doing over the past years, you may not have to worry about it at all. But if, as some do, you have put off updating, you need to update your system before March 11. If you have updated Windows XP recently you should be fine. If you have a new Vista computer you have no worries as Vista is already set for the change.
If you are like me, a little hyper, and you use your Outlook Calendar extensively for appointments and scheduling, go to Microsoft online for assistance. The MS site that can help most, of the many available, would be “support.microsoft.com/kb/931836.” You can download and install the file recommended for your operating system and all should be fine. If your computer doesn’t need the update it will stop installing after a minute or so.
You may still have the urge to get up twice a year at 2 a.m.

Everyone, don't forget to spring forward!

I wonder if my atomic clock will do the right thing.
