Made in the USA: New Web Site Promotes American Product

Oct. 14: Employees of Mountain and Sackett, a tie manufacturer with a plant in Long Island City, N.Y., make ties by hand.


QUEENS, N.Y. — In just a month since its official launch, a new Web site MadeInUSA has signed up more than 350,000 U.S.-based companies looking to encourage consumers to "be American and buy American."

Creators of the site hope to ensure that as many jobs as possible stay in the U.S. rather than be outsourced overseas.

For 50 years now, Mountain and Sackett, a tie manufacturer with a plant in Long Island City, N.Y., has made ties mostly by hand. Some 50 employees, some who have been with the company for decades, stitch meticulously for 40 hours a week. They get health care benefits too.

With a growing number of Americans opting to buy cheaper garments that are imported from outside the country — Mountain and Sackett has had to be creative in its approach to generating sales, all while trying to keep its workforce employed and the family atmosphere of the company in tact.

It takes an hour and a half to make a tie by hand at Mountain and Sacketts. Nick Sackett, the president of the company, says if he replaced some of the workforce with equipment, the ties could be made in a minute and a half. But many Americans value the hand-sewn product made right here in the U.S. So Sackett and his partner, John Mountain, logged onto MadeInUSA and registered their business for free, trying to get the word out.

MadeInUSA is based on the principle that "patriotic spending" keeps hard-earned dollars, made on American jobs, in America.

The Web site can help you find furniture, pet supplies, apparel and wine, to name a few, all at the click of a mouse.

The solution is too simple. The American people need to start requiring the government, that works for us, when using our money to purchase all goods and services bought on our behalf, to be only from United States sources. That is what our founding fathers wanted.

The concept that they are saving us money by buying off-shore is bogus, as the jobs lost and subsequent lost income will eliminate the ability for us to buy American made products. This can only exacerbate the increased unemployment, and cause company bankruptcy. Don't be fooled, their intention is to grab more power by making us all poor, and by controlling more big business.

The greed of us all wanting lower prices is also cutting our own throats in the process. The government and businesses, as well as the consumer has forgotten what made this country the greatest in history. To just flush it all away, and end up just another poor socialist country is a tremendous waste of our divinely enspired founding fathers vision, and the lives of all those that fought and died to keep us a free nation and a great Republic. --JB

Unfortunately "Made in the USA" also can mean made here by illegal foreign workers. This site lists "American made jeans" by the All American Clothing Company, which recently was forced to lay off 1,500 workers suspected of being here illegally. That is why we need E-Verify now and permanently!

Showing patriotic spirit is good, but I would prefer to see a site that offers American products made by certified legal AMERICANS. Many of these companies could very well use illegal labor and may be panderers to La Raza or other groups since there is no mention of a verification system in the article. I do not see the difference in buying foreign products produced by foreigners in another country and buying an "American product" produced by illegal labor here in the U.S. Either way, the American worker does not benefit.

Each of the three sites given has a "Contact form". This is a good opportunity to write them directly expressing this concern, and requesting that they only certify companies who use E-Verify in their hiring practices to insure that the products they advertise as "Made in the U.S.A." are actually made by those eligible legally to work in our country.

I agree,unless "Buy American" sites list only companies using E-Verify we are just helping IA's stay in our country and helping dishonest businesses become wealthy while they Pretend to care about citizens.
