Reciprocity - I know the usual argument against a third party is that it will most likely take needed Republican votes, so the lesser of the evils is to stick with the Republicans. I don't want to use this usual argument, because I know its what prevents us from getting out of the "lesser of the evils" dillemma, BUT:

This next election is very important in terms of the immigration issue. If Dems maintain majority in congress with 2010 elections, they WILL very likely push amnesty through. I would like to let our not-so-beloved GOP know we will give them one more chance in next election 2010, if they cave-in to invasionists, we are gone (those of us for whom this is a primary issue). Maybe there haven't been enough of us who have loudly and persistently let them know how we feel.....?

My understanding of Libertarian platform is they are in favor of open borders and illegal immigration.

How about we surround them with a bunch of independent party congressmen and Senators that vote FOR the American people instead of for corporations and racist special interest groups! That would make a good example for future elections now then wouldn't it? We might just be able to turn some Democans and Republocrates into honest people by stricking a little fear into their free ride future...

    Avenger -
I am in agreement with you about needing a third party. I am just saying it is risky to vote third party in the next election 2010, because it would likely split the conservative vote, and if the Dems maintain a majority in Congress they might very well pass amnesty in 2011-2012, while Obama is still Pres.

I was hoping we could let the GOP know we will give them one last chance in 2010 to vote against amnesty and illegal immigration, or we are gone.

builditnow-does that mean that you think that Independents and Republicans will not agree on some issues that matter to Americans? Do you think that Independents will have a liberal agenda? My thoughts here are that putting Independents in office will send the message that we are tired of professional politicians telling us what we are going to get rather than having representation. If politicians represent the will of the American people than what is the problem? Isn't that what they are really supposed to be doing? And if putting a 3rd party in office in sufficient numbers to make that point seems like it will weaken the mathmatical fear tactics that have kept Americans voting for the lessor of 2 evils then we are once again suckers to the fear and have gained nothing and only have more of the same. Do you see my point?

I think its time to move this country away from party politics and vote for candidates on their individual merits and not base our choices on what party they belong to. I'm in favor of not having parties, I believe that was George Washington's way of thinking...we should have individual representation and not just another Repubo, Libo, Demo-whatis or whatever. That's just my opinion and you can take it for what it is worth.

Avenger - No, in fact I suggested the opposite: I said third party candidates are more likely to split the conservative/Republican vote, because most mainstream third parties (e.g.Libertarians) are more likely to be conservative.

I don't disagree about the need and desire for third parties. I am agreeing with you.

The problem with third party candidates is, and always has been, that because they are more likely to be conservative, there is the risk that votes by conservatives will end up split between the third party candidate and the Republican, so neither will win, the Democrat will win, and this is usually even worse.

I just think the next election 2010 might be a dangerous time to try to bring in third party candidates. Unless one can find candidates and significantly grow a third political party by Nov 2010.

Let's hope that more Americans wake up between now and then and what you suggest here comes to fruition.

I would literally dance in the streets.

The only other caution about third parties is that they aren't always what one might assume.

Libertarian party: they are actually FOR illegal immigration and open borders. Since stopping illegal immigration is my priority issue, I could NOT support them.

Constitution party: they are very opposed to illegal immigration which is good. They are a bit too focused on Christianity and religion for my own political preferences, but nonetheless thats the best option I can see for a viable third party right now, at least if one's main priorities is stopping illegal immigration.
