Brown shrinks governor’s office by 11 percent

Bigwigs in the governor’s office are costing about 11 percent less under Gov. Jerry Brown than they did under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, according to an examination by our colleagues at California Watch.

The total spent on salaries for top posts under Schwarzenegger was $1.37 million.

Under Brown, it’s $1.22 million.

Brown said he’ll cut the governor’s office staff by 25 percent compared to Schwarzenegger’s. And, as Brown promises to impose big cuts in state government, there are fewer jobs in the governor’s office, California Watch says.

Brown announced the hiring of nine top-level staffers this week (10, if you count his wife, Anne Gust, who will serve as special counsel at no salary. Former first lady Maria Shriver also did not receive a salary, but used the official office of first lady. Brown had eliminated that.)
