Man sentenced in Mexico for NM killing

(AP) - A man charged with shooting and killing his former girlfriend in Bernalillo County in August 1995 has been sentenced to 30 years in a Mexican prison.

Carlos Luis Valerio Gardea was charged with murder about a year after the death of Selina Marie Sedillo. Valerio Gardea fled to Mexico.

The New Mexico attorney general's office subsequently filed a case in Mexico City for his prosecution in that country. Attorney General Gary King says his predecessors used the Mexican penal code to charge and eventually send Valerio Gardea to prison.

His office was recently notified a Mexican appeals court reaffirmed Valerio Gardea's conviction and sentence.
