Prominent Orchard Park man charged with beheading his wife

Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband -- an influential member of the local Muslim community -- reported her death to police Thursday.

Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.

"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.

Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

The killing apparently occurred some time late Thursday afternoon. Detectives still are looking for the murder weapon.

"Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said today.

Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband.

"She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th [of February]," Benz said.

Muzzammil Hassan was arraigned before Village Justice Deborah Chimes and sent to the Erie County Holding Center.

Oh, that totally changed my view. Can't say it makes be judge the faith, but it does make me leery of the men in those countries who still see women and their wives as less than human. I seriously don't get this new barbarism that seems to be spreading this globe like wildfire. Can't just kill someone....have to torture and behead or dismember or light on fire or some other sickening way....drop in acid....whatever. It's disgusting.

How can you behead someone and not be charged with first degree murder! Is this guy getting a break because his religion seemingly condones this barbaric behavior!!!

When you find someone dead, you usually call 911, rather than getting into the car and driving to the police station. Muslim men, especially, hate the western world for freedoms given to the lower class--women. And while a man may declare "I divorce you" three times and that is legal, for a woman to file for divorce is a black mark against his family and hers. Women can get stoned to death for even going shopping alone without a male relative. Even in Damascus, where many young women wore slacks and headscarves, the family I stayed with were very devout. We never went to a restaurant unless the father walked in first to asked if they served alcohol. Going to a young man's birthday party at an old house with the courtyard in the middle, all the men were outside while women were in a room with blackout blankets on the windows, no air-conditioning but an oscillating fan. And this family was very well off.
In downtown Cairo's shopping district, not wearing a head scarf, I was grabbed in the crotch and chest a few times.
This kind of culture does not belong here. PERIOD!

I thought Islam was a religion of peace?

No, Islam is a racist, sexist religion of oppression. It's why until recently it had no hope of survival in the United States.

Just look up Udmurts or Udmurtia on the web, who packed up everything and moved to the Arctic circle to get away from the priests forcing them to accept Catholicism.

I agree VT ! "Islam is a religion of peace" is about as accurate as those who claim illegal invaders "only come here seeking a better life!" The motive behind both statements is similiar, which is to deflect the real intentions behind those groups for which these claims are exclaimed on behalf of.

In both cases, the truth is the opposite of what is being claimed. Illegal invaders do not come here simply seeking a better life and Islam is not a religion of "peace."

Anyway, that's my take on the matter.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - A shocking and gruesome story of a T.V. station owner's wife, found decapitated at the Bridge's Muslim T.V. network in Orchard Park.

In pictures of happier times, 37-year-old Aasiya Zubair and her 44-year-old husband Mo Hassan, who founded Bridges T.V.

Thursday evening, police converge on the station's Orchard Park studio and office.

"The worst that I've seen, yeah," said Andrew Benz, Orchard Park Police Chief.

Police tell News 4 the only suspect in this case is the victim's husband, who walked into police headquarters in Orchard Park Thursday evening to report his wife was dead.

It's being called a brutal murder.

"She was decapitated,yes," said Benz.

Zubair was found in the hallway. The mission of Bridges TV is to foster understanding between cultures and diverse populations. According to police, the couple had trouble getting along.

Benz said, "There has been some history. I believe Mrs. Hassan, the victim, had recently filed for divorce and had served the papers on Mr. Hassan."

Police say Zubair and her husband were parents to four children. The marital issues came to light recently with police going to the couple's Big Tree Road in Orchard Park last Friday. ApparentlyZubair felt she was in danger.

"We had been down to their house on Friday, the 6th to serve an order of protection," said Benz.

Police say Hassan moved out that day. Bridges T.V. staffers aren't commenting. The website list Hassan as the CEO and his wife was the general manager. It's not clear if she was still working at Bridges.

"Simply because you get an order or protection, I don't think you can put your guard down and say I am safe now," Benz said.

The Erie County Holding Center is where Hassan is being held on a second degree murder charge.

There's no bail at this point.

Authorities aren't saying anything about a possible motive.

They are trying to contact the victim's family in Pakistan.

Bush let 40,000 Pakistanis into the United States every year for the past 2 years. I suspect we'll have more of this. What a damn tragedy. If she's from Pakistan, then he is too probably, and all this expense and tragedy over the inability of our government to "Just Say No".
