A 392-page textbook typically used for college-level heath classes is being adopted at one school to teach ninth-graders about oral sex, vibrators, gay marriage, and bondage.

The book titled “Your Health Today” will be utilized to instruct the 2,400 students enrolled in the Bay Area school district. All students will be required to successfully complete the course in order to graduate. Despite the school being a taxpayer-funded public school, there is very little that the over one thousand outraged parents in that school district can do to change the course requirement.
In addition to teaching the children about oral sex, vibrators, and bondage, the textbook also devotes several sections to gay marriage, e-cigarettes, and information about online dating sites. The ninth-graders will also get their eyes full of pictures depicting male and female sexual organs during different phases of arousal, with information about masturbation and popular sexual positions.
Despite the resistance from frenzied parents over the material, school officials are defiant about their decision to use the textbook, saying that the 14-year olds should know about sex and bondage before reaching college. Fremont Unified School District board president Lara Calvert-York stated:

“We really want them to have a safe place to get facts about their bodies and how to handle things and how they need to be mature to deal with these things.”

Although the school board narrowly voted to adopt the book to teach their 2,400 students, school district heath teachers were unanimous in their decision to use the material. The raunchy contents were enthusiastically accepted by Michele Hartmangruber, who works at a Fremont high school:

“I want to let everyone know, if you think sex isn’t happening with your freshmen, you need to take your blinders off,” she said during a school board meeting. “It’s happening, and it’s happening in the corners, in the bathrooms, in the cars, in the parks and even on the 50-yard line in front of everyone.”

As a tax-payer funded school, it seems insane to me that parents have zero say in the material being taught to their children. What would you do if your 14-year-old came home with a textbook explaining what bondage was?
