Massachusetts' city populations grow, resort areas shrink

Massachusetts' city populations grow, resort areas shrink

    By Rick Hampson, USA TODAY
    Updated 3m ago |

Massachusetts' five largest cities gained residents over the past decade, but Census figures released Tuesday showed population shifting away from two popular resort areas at opposite ends of the state.

Boston and Massachusetts' five largest cities all saw population growth in the last decade, new Census data show.

Reflecting a national trend, Massachusetts logged substantial increases in Hispanics and Asians. It also lost population on Cape Cod and in the Berkshire Hills region of western Massachusetts, both of which have relatively high proportions of older residents.

For a few hours, Boston's population was a cause célèbre. First, Secretary of State William Galvin announced that the state capital had dropped about 2.5% since 2000. But Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's office immediately produced what turned out to be the correct numbers: The Hub registered a 4.8% increase, from 589,141 to 617,594.

Galvin's office said it had "miscalculated."

Galvin also had said that Springfield, the state's third largest city, lost population. In fact, Springfield's increased slightly to about 153,000, a 0.6% increase.

Three of the state's five largest cities recorded increases greater than the statewide increase of 3.1%. They were No. 1 Boston (4.8%), No. 2 Worcester (4.9%) and No. 5 Cambridge (3.8%). No. 4 Lowell grew by 1.3%

The Hispanic population rose 46% and Asians grew 47%; blacks increased 26%. The white population dropped 1.9%, although whites continued to make up a big majority of the state's residents.

    Legal immigration isn't the problem.
The problem is ILLEGAL immigration. IMO
More than half of all illegal aliens from all over the world come from one country. MEXICO.
Once here the illegal aliens have anchor babies, who under current law, are American citizens.

While I realize that this is a forum for discussion of problems caused by illegal aliens, I would dispute your contention that "legal immigration" is Not the problem. It is a huge problem. The US is currently granting over a million green cards per year to foreign workers and thousands of HB1 visas for highly(ostensibly) skilled workers to come into this country, irregardless of the fact that we have millions of under and unemployed citizens. Did you notice that our 2010 population was recently announced to be 309+million people in this country? The 1970 US pop. was 200 million. Where are we going with this? How many people do we need to accomodate in this country before enough is enough?

More Hispanics came here illegally (counting their anchor babies) in the last 10 years than came here legally. IMO
The census counted illegal aliens as well as citizens and legal aliens.
I'm in favor of ending all legal immigration until the economy greatly improves (maybe forever)
and ending all illegal immigration forever.
