    CA--Feds To Bill Slaughterhouse

    Feds To Bill Slaughterhouse
Slaughterhouse Will Pay $67M For Beef Recall

CHINO, Calif. -- The federal government will bill a California slaughterhouse more than $67 million for expenses associated with the largest beef recall in U.S. history.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service said the bill for Westland/Hallmark Co. could rise as high as $117 million when final expenses are tallied up.

The agency recalled 143 million pounds of beef after the Humane Society of the United States released undercover video showing plant employees abusing sick or weakened cows.

School districts and states spent millions destroying the beef to comply with the recall.

If the slaughterhouse can't pay -- which is likely -- taxpayers will pick up the bill.

An attorney for slaughterhouse owner Steve Mendell did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday.

This is really starting to stink.

First we have the Federal Reserve Note being backed by bad home mortgages! Now it looks like we will also have them backed by bad meat.

The stock market should be going through the roof. If not because of the way the government is covering the failed business then it should be going up just to remain even because of the inflated money.

Some one said something like they have privatized profits and made taking a loss a public matter.

This isn't really new I suppose. Here in California when PG&E makes a profit the shareholders divvy them up. When they had a huge loss from a failed nuclear power plant they passed it on to the rate payers. And I would imagine they figured a way to do it that it didn't interfere with their profit divvying.

If this is the case, then Steve Mendell better not have a pot to piss in when they get through with him!
