Mayor Gordon: Sheriff Arpaio giving state bad reputation

Gordon: Sheriff Arpaio giving state bad reputation
    Scott Wong - Mar. 27, 2009 02:40 PM
    The Arizona Republic

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon told about 100 people attending an immigration reform conference today that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's workplace raids and immigration sweeps have given people the impression that the state is becoming a breeding ground for racial discrimination.

Gordon said while he was in Washington, D.C., this week that "several people told me that, due to profiling and other civil rights abuses by the Maricopa County sheriff, Arizona is getting the same reputation as Alabama had in the 1950s."

Later, Gordon told reporters: "He's not using dogs or hoses, but he's targeting people of color."

One year after he first publicly denounced Arpaio's actions at a Cesar Chavez luncheon, Gordon on Friday told the Reform Not Raids National Summit in Phoenix that he believes the chorus of public opposition against Arpaio has helped sustain a federal investigation into possible civil-rights violations by the sheriff.

"We've got a sheriff who is happy to zip-tie anyone who looks illegal, whatever that means. He says that he can tell if someone is likely to be illegal . . . 'by how they're dressed and where they're coming from,' " Gordon said, according to a copy of his remarks. "Well then, why do they all have brown skin? I'm not kidding here, but where are the Canadians? The Asian? The Europeans? Why don't we see them being paraded around like circus animals? He's (racially) profiling."

Arpaio, who said he has been bombarded by calls from media and supporters, fired back today, calling Gordon's reference to the Deep South "disturbing."

"This guy is in fantasy land. He's insulting not only this sheriff, but all the deputy sheriffs, federal ICE agents and 160 of my officers who are risking their lives every night to enforce the immigration laws," Arpaio said.

With Democratic allies controlling both the White House and Congress, Gordon has been ramping up his rhetoric, Arpaio said, perhaps in a bid to receive a federal appointment. The mayor faces term limits in January 2012.

"Now, because of Obama and (Homeland Security Secretary
) Janet Napolitano, he probably is looking for a job because he can never be elected as governor," Arpaio said. "It all has to do with politics."

The summit, hosted by immigration-rights group Somos America, runs today and Saturday at the First Institutional Baptist Church, a symbolic site in the ongoing battle over civil rights in Arizona.

It was from the church's pulpit where in 1986, then-Gov. Bruce Babbitt signed an executive order creating a Martin Luther King Jr. state holiday, one that was later rescinded by Gov. Evan Mecham, then approved by voters.

Gordon, who testified this week in Washington about how more federal funding is needed to combat immigration-related violence, blasted Arpaio for being more concerned about publicity stunts than serving 40,000 outstanding warrants for dangerous criminals.

Arpaio has created a "Sanctuary County" for felons, Gordon said, a play off criticism that Phoenix has become a "Sanctuary City
    " for illegal immigrants.

"We have, in this county, a sheriff who won't serve a warrant, but never passes up an opportunity to use Charles Barkley as a prop, to extend an absurd offer to house Paris Hilton in a tent, or to squander scarce manpower on a goofy reality television show that ties up dozens of sworn officers who, I'm sure, would rather be doing real work," Gordon said.

"And then his media team sells you snake oil with the promise that he's the only one enforcing the laws. That would be entertaining if it weren't so devastating to our community," the mayor added.

Deputy Sheriff Paul Chagolla disputed Gordon's characterization. Chagolla said last year his office cleared nearly 17,000 felony warrants, more than any other law-enforcement agency in the Valley, including Phoenix police.

"There is no other agency that performs to the level that we do respective to serving warrants," Chagolla said.

Gordon is on par with that little slimeball Villaraigosa and needs to be recalled. He's just not that important.

Canadian illegal aliens are not hanging around day labor sites leering at women and urinating in the streets. They are not having a half dozen anchor babies at our expense. They are living in their RVs at a trailer park and playing golf.

As for Asian and European illegals yeah the Sheriff should snag some of them also. But let's face it 90% of the illegals are Latino so at least 90% of those Sheriff Joe apprehends will be Latino.

Arpaio should be working as head of a dedicated force of Arizona state immigration police.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Good points Bowman! Gordon always seems to forget facts such as this during his Sheriff Joe bashing sessions.

Is Gordon even an American, because he sure doesn't seem like he is looking out for the welfare of his city. Perhaps he is getting plenty of payment from the drug cartels to bolster his retirement.
Unfortunately, this is one instance where freedom of speech is being exploited for political ends and denying the reality of the community he is supposed to represent. Arpaio is enforcing the laws on the books, like a county sheriff is supposed to. And Gordon is spewing hate speech against American citizens of all races. Time to have this guy undergo some mental tests before he makes another speech or continues any longer in office.

I would be proud to work for Sheriff Arpaio any time.

Sheriff Joe has integrity and courage!

Gordon is a spine-less jelly fish and a traitor!
