    MCSO Posse Readies Mall Patrols
Bad Economy Will Bring Out 'Small-Time Crook,' Sheriff Says

PHOENIX -- For the 16th consecutive holiday season, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office posse will patrol Valley malls starting Friday at 6 p.m.

The mall patrol will gather at the Metro Center Mall where Sheriff Joe Arpaio will brief posse volunteers about the challenges he sees in this year's operation.

"Tough times like these translate to added stress and flared tempers and the occasional small time crook looking for a freebie," Arpaio said. "I'll be asking deputies and posse volunteers to remember that as they patrol or are out and about this year."

Arpaio said hundreds of volunteers will provide free law enforcement assistance to shoppers and retailers throughout the Valley.

As an added precaution, sheriff's deputies will carry weapons and take enforcement action where necessary, while on their own time, Arpaio said. The sheriff instituted the change two years ago and MCSO remains one of the few law enforcement agencies in the nation to have such a policy.

The office currently has nearly 800 sworn deputies.

Arpaio started the operation in 1993 after a series of carjackings at Valley malls.

"The posse has performed this community service every year and its presence has been a great deterrent to crime," he said. "There hasn't been one serious incident in all these years."

The sheriff's holiday mall patrol operation uses marked and unmarked units, horse mounted patrol, segues, foot patrol unit, motorcycle patrol units and canines when necessary.

Every major mall utilizes the posse's service which generally runs through the day after Christmas.
