YUMA, AZ - Yuma police say five people have been killed and one person has been injured in a series of shootings Thursday morning.

The Yuma Sun reports an attorney is among the dead.

Several buildings were placed on lockdown, including three schools and a courthouse.

The Yuma Sun says police responded to a shooting in the 400 block of 2nd Avenue where attorneys on the scene confirmed that attorney Jerrold Shelley was shot and killed.

Yuma police Sgt. Clint Norred tells The Associated Press that five people were killed in the Yuma area.

The Yuma Sun reports the Yuma County Sheriff's Office is also investigating the death of woman in Wellton this morning.

Police reportedly told the Yuma Sun the shootings are related. Details about the shooter and victims were not immediately clear.

Officials are now looking for a PT Cruiser-type vehicle with foil on the back window, according to the Yuma Sun.

The Yuma Sun reports there was police scanner traffic of two more possible victims in the Wellton area, as well as a self-inflicted gunshot wound reported off Highway 95 near Blaisdell. The Yuma Sun is working to confirm those reports.

5 dead in Yuma, Ariz., shootings

Gunman apparently takes own life; attorney reportedly among victims

msnbc.com staff and news service reports
    updated 19 minutes ago

YUMA, Ariz. — Five people were killed in a series of shootings around Yuma County, Ariz., the Yuma Sun newspaper reported Thursday. One other victim was injured and airlifted to a Phoenix-area hospital.

The shooter apparently took his own life, the Sun reported.

Yuma police spokesman Clint Norred told the Sun that the shootings were connected.

Four fatalities took place in the county and the fifth person was killed inside Yuma, a city of 91,000 along the Colorado River.

The downtown Yuma victim was attorney Jerrold Shelley, who was shot and killed, colleagues told the Sun. Norred would not confirm victims' identities.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office was called to the first scene this morning, when the body of a woman was found in a yard at Avenue 35-1/2E and Old Highway 80, the Sun said.

Around 9:21 a.m., the Yuma Police Department responded to a shooting in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue in Yuma, which is where Shelley was killed.

According to police scanner traffic followed by the Sun, two more shootings were reported in the Wellton area, followed by a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Blaisdell off Highway 95. The Yuma Sun was not able to confirm the location of the sixth shooting.

The Yuma County Courthouse and schools in the area, including Roosevelt, Fourth Avenue Junior High and the Post building, were placed under a lockdown, which was later lifted.

"The situation has ended and now we’re sorting out the details," Yuma Mayor Al Krieger told the Sun. "My sympathies to the families with this loss of life."

The Sun said City Administrator Greg Wilkinson warned staff in an email that "certain people" were targeted.

Wellton Mayor James Deermer told the Sun "rumors are floating around." He called the shootings "a tragedy for our community ... that’s true anywhere."

Police: Gunman kills 5 then self in Arizona

By Donna Leinwand Leger, USA TODAY
    Updated 28m ago |

A gunman killed five people and then himself in a shooting in Yuma, Ariz., that forced authorities to close schools and a courthouse, police said Thursday.

The shooting spree "stemmed from a divorce situation," Yuma Police Chief Jerry Geier said. He declined to give details.

Police identified the shooter as Carey Hal Dyess, 73, of Yuma. Dyess shot six people, killing five and gravely wounding another, before he killed himself, Yuma community relations director Greg Hyland said.

Police found Dyess dead at about 11:30 a.m. in a dry creek in Blaisdell, a desert area 10 miles east of downtown Yuma and about a mile from the nearest subdivision, Hyland said.

Dyess began the shooting spree around 6 a.m. in Yuma County, Geier said. The first victim was a woman, who was airlifted to a hospital in Phoenix, the police chief said. After shooting four other people in the county, Dyess drove into the city to attorney Jerrold Shelley's office, arriving a few minutes after 9 a.m.

"He came in with a gun. His administrative assistant was there. He told her to leave or get down," Geier said.

Dyess then went into Shelley's office and shot him multiple times, Geier said.

Police were dispatched to the office at about 9:21 a.m.

"While we were there investigating that, we learned the sheriff's office was investigating another shooting that happened prior to that," he said.

Meanwhile, reports of other shooting victims had come into the sheriff's office from different locations in the county.

"We concluded all the shootings were likely related," Geier said.

By 10 a.m. local time, police had identified the shooter, Hyland said.

"We knew what the suspect looked like. They knew what he was driving — a PT Cruiser," Hyland said. Police looked for "an old white guy wearing a green shirt."

The city locked down schools and sent extra police patrols to City Hall.

Community members who knew Shelley mourned the lawyer's death.

"Jerry's a pillar of the community. We are shocked and saddened by his loss. He's a very, very nice person," said Bridget Marquez, an office manager at the Fila Smith Law Firm, a law office in a building that shares a parking lot with Shelley's office. Police flooded the parking lot and strung police tape to block both buildings, she said.

"Everyone thinks it's us because of the police tape, but we're all fine. We heard nothing until the police came," Marquez said.

Shelley was "very involved in the community" and served on several boards, Marquez said. "He was a good neighbor and colleague."

Police have not identified the other victims, but they all have some relationship with Dyess, Geier said.

"I don't know they were blood relatives, but I think there was a connection," he said. "We're still actively investigating this."
