Michelle Obama Wears $540 Designer Sneakers to Feed the Poor

It's a first lady faux pas -- wearing expensive, high-fashion French designer sneakers to a food bank.

Michelle Obama wore the sneakers, made by Lanvin, while helping feed the poor at a Washington food bank on Wednesday. The pricetag on the footwear? A cool $540.

Keds, they're not.

The sneakers, which come in denim and satin, are a favorite of comic Ellen DeGeneres and rapper Kanye West -- and they're "certainly not a reflection of the poor economy," said FOX News' Noelle Watters, host of iMag Style.

"She paired the kicks with a much more reasonably priced cardigan from J. Crew similar to the one she's worn in the past," Watters said. "And quite honestly, the usually well-styled Michelle didn't match. While her over-priced designer sneaks were gray and pink, her sweater was a gold argyle style. A definite fashion faux pas."

According to the New York Daily News, the first lady of style likely got her sneakers through Ikram, the Chicago retailer that usually outfits her.

Obama's style helped catapult her into the 93rd spot of Maxim's "eyeball-searing, fantasy-fulfilling, brain-exploding" Hot 100 list, which was announced Friday.

The first lady's sense of fashion has received considerable media attention. During her trip to Europe last month to accompany President Obama to the G20 summit, her fashion choices and protocol-breaking touch of the Queen of England nearly received as much ink as the summit itself.

The White House did not return a message seeking comment.

Oh, for heavens sake! Her wearing expensive sneakers to a food bank is really not wasting airwaves or computer bytes. There is a huge market out there with collectors and museums that will bid on anything a First Lady had touched or worn in public.
After all, aren't there a couple of wars still going on? The American media apparently has gone perquacky, especially sniping at sneakers.

I have never paid 1/5 of that price for dress shoes much less sneakers.

I don't understand why anyone in their right mind would spend that much for sneakers of any type.

It's ALL just show. I wonder how many times she has been to a food bank before the presidential bid??? She was probably too busy at her $323,000 make-work job, which was eliminated after she left to be first lady.

She gets bad pub every time she's on the line for the homeless! Remember the publicity she got when the homeless guy whipped out his cell phone?




It doesn't detract from the first lady's generous gesture or the real needs she seeks to highlight to ask two bothersome journalistic questions about these news photos:

If this unidentified meal recipient is too poor to buy his own food, how does he afford a cellphone?

And if he is homeless, where do they send the cellphone bills?

Most of the guys with "Will work for food" signs , and people who ask for spare change, have cell phones so that they can contact their drug dealer just as soon as they get their hands on enough money to buy some drugs. Most drug addicts and alcoholics qualify for Social Security Dis ability or S.S.I.. They get signed up while at a homeless shelter and get a bank account set up with direct deposit. That gets them an A.T.M. card. They can use their money for alcohol, drugs and phones because the enablers give them food and let them stay at homeless shelters.

It most likely is a prepaid phone plan.
You can pay with cash in phone stores, Walmart, many different 7/11 type stores,liquor stores, etc. in any city.
No credit card, mailing address, or even a name is needed.
When you see an ad for a prepaid phone plan it always says, "Not credit check".
What it doesn't say is no address or name needed.

How many meals could a homeless shelter serve for $540 ?
