MTV Classic to bring back old music videos, ‘Beavis and Butthead,’ ‘Daria’ and other vintage programs

That’s the way you do it, you play guitar on the MTV.

Years after abandoning its successful highly successful format in favor of mind-numbing reality shows, MTV will try to re-create its golden age starting on Monday when MTV Classic replaces VH1 Classic.

To mark the 35th anniversary of MTV’s launch, the format change from VH1 Classic will begin on Aug. 1 with the airing of MTV One, the network’s first hour of programming from 1981, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Nirvana episode of "MTV Unplugged" will air on the first day of MTV Classic.

Following that, the rest of the first day on air will feature a “Total Request Live” retrospective and a marathon of “MTV Unplugged” shows which will include Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Oasis performances.

Going forward, MTV Classic will air concerts, music videos and movies about pop culture around the clock, with episodes of old programs such as “Beavis and Butthead,” “Daria,” and “Aeon Flux” airing in primetime slots.

On weeknights, “from the vault” blocks will air between 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and feature episodes of “Jackass,” “Pimp My Ride” and “Cribs,” among others.

Old "Daria" episodes will be shown on primetime slots during the week.

The primetime format switches on Fridays to episodes of live music series such as “Unplugged” and “Storytellers,” while the weekends will be full of shows like “The Real World,” “Laguna Beach,” and more.

"From Beavis and Butthead to Laguna Beach, MTV’s programming vault is a music and pop culture goldmine with universal resonance,” MTV president Sean Atkins said. "MTV Classic gives audiences a modern and artful home for classic MTV programming and alongside MTV, MTV2, MTV Live and mtvU — rounds out a diverse portfolio with music and youth culture at its core."
