Mueller subpoenas Trump Organization documents in Russia probe

Washington (CNN) Special counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed the Trump Organization for business documents, a source familiar with the matter told CNN on Thursday.

The New York Times, which first reported the development, said the subpoena included documents related to Russia. The reports mark the first publicly known time that Mueller has demanded documents related to President Donald Trump's businesses.

Trump has said he would view any investigation of his or his family's personal finances as a "violation" by Mueller that crosses a red line.
CNN reported in January that the company had voluntarily provided documents on a range of events, conversations and meetings from Trump's real estate business to Mueller and congressional investigators, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The source who spoke to CNN on Thursday said the subpoena's intention was to "clean up" and to ensure that all related documents are handed over to the special counsel.

Neither White House officials nor a lawyer representing the Trump Organization immediately responded to a request for comment.

Trump has repeatedly railed against the investigation and denied any wrongdoing.

The Times, citing two people briefed on the matter, said the subpoena was delivered "in recent weeks."

The Times said special counsel witnesses had been asked recently about a potential real estate deal in Moscow, and that investigators have questioned witnesses about the flow of money from the United Arab Emirates to the United States.

CNN has reported that George Nader, a Middle East specialist tied to secret meetings between the UAE and Trump associates, is cooperating with Mueller.

Trump said last year that any investigation into his finances would cross a line

President Trump said last year that he would view any investigation of his or his family's personal finances — those that didn't involve Russia — as a "violation" by Special Counsel Robert Mueller that crosses a red line.

Trump was asked in July 2017 interview with the New York Times whether that move would be a breach of Mueller's investigation.

"I would say yeah, I would say yes," Trump said. "By the way, I would say, I don't — I don't — I mean, it's possible there's a condo or something, so, you know, I sell a lot of condo units, and somebody from Russia buys a condo, who knows? I don't make money from Russia."

The Times reported today that Mueller subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents.

I do not think foreigners should be permitted to buy up our real estate.

We also need to terminate Dual Citizenship. You are 100% American citizen or you are not.

The laws need to change where they can "lease" only. I think Mexico has the same policy. You do not own it...you lease it.

How can people who are not legal citizens of our country be allowed to buy our real estate?

Foreigners have always been able to buy US real estate. Several decades ago, several states passed laws that prevented the foreign acquisition of farmland, but some who passed those laws to protect our food supply have repealed some or all of those restrictions. Americans buy property in the foreign countries, so it's just a quid pro quo type of deal that's been around ... forever to my knowledge, with the exception of farmland. Obviously, the government and military also have some restrictions.
