    • DOGE team, led by Elon Musk, slashed nearly $1 billion in wasteful spending at the Department of Education (ED), canceling 89 contracts and 29 DEI grants.

    • The move has been met with praise from conservatives, who see it as a victory for fiscal responsibility, but has sparked outrage among Democrats and federal bureaucrats.

    • Former President Trump endorsed the effort, calling it a way to root out waste, fraud and abuse.

    • Democrats have formed a special task force to combat the cuts, while conservatives see it as a step toward shrinking the size and scope of government.

    • The battle over ED represents a broader struggle between those who believe in limited government and those who advocate for an expansive federal bureaucracy.

In a stunning move that has left Washington bureaucrats reeling, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team stormed the Department of Education (ED) this week, slashing nearly $1 billion in wasteful spending. The operation, which has been hailed as a victory for fiscal responsibility by conservatives, has sparked outrage among Democrats and their allies in the federal bureaucracy.

The DOGE team, led by 22-year-old lieutenants Akash Bobba and Ethan Shaotran, entered ED’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., and began canceling contracts and grants deemed unnecessary or ideologically driven. According to reports, the team terminated 89 contracts worth 881 million and eliminated 29 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) training grants, saving an additional 101 million.

Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) described the scene as chaotic, claiming staff were left “terrified” by the DOGE team’s actions. “They are in the building, on the 6th floor, canceling grants and contracts,” Stansbury told HuffPost. “It’s not legal. They know it’s not legal. But they’re doing it anyway. The only recourse we have right now is to go to the courts.”

    A long-awaited conservative victory
ED has long been a target of conservative ire, with many Republicans arguing that it serves as a bastion of liberal activism and bureaucratic overreach. Former President Donald Trump campaigned on the promise of dismantling the department, calling it a symbol of the “Deep State” and vowing to return education funding to the states.

“Nobody had any idea it was that bad, that sick and that corrupt,” Trump said this week, praising Musk’s efforts. “This is about rooting out waste, fraud and abuse, and saving taxpayer money.”

Trump’s executive order, signed on Tuesday, directs all federal agencies to cooperate with DOGE’s “workplace optimization initiative.” The move signals a full-throated endorsement of Musk’s mission to streamline government operations and eliminate inefficiencies.

Democrats push back, but conservatives stand firm
Unsurprisingly, the DOGE team’s actions have drawn fierce opposition from Democrats and their allies. On Tuesday, government workers and activists gathered for a “Save the Civil Service” rally in Washington, D.C., hosted by the American Federation of Government Employees. Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), attempted to enter ED building but were denied access.

Waters, known for her fiery rhetoric, demanded that the individual blocking her entry reveal his name, but he refused. The White House responded to the incident with characteristic bluntness, with Communications Director Steven Cheung calling Waters “annoying AF” and comparing her behavior to “a scene ripped straight out of Flowers in the Attic.”

Meanwhile, House Democrats have formed a special task force to combat Trump’s efforts to cut government spending. The group, co-chaired by Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD), claims to be fighting to “protect and defend everyday Americans from the harm being inflicted by this administration.”

A new era of fiscal responsibility
For conservatives, the DOGE team’s success represents a long-overdue reckoning for a bloated and inefficient federal bureaucracy. Republican Speaker Mike Johnson praised Musk’s efforts during a press conference, stating, “What Elon and the DOGE effort is doing right now is what Congress has been unable to do in recent years because the agencies have hidden some of this from us. It’s good, and right for the American people.”

Musk, for his part, has defended the cuts as a matter of common sense. “It’s not draconian or radical, I think,” he said. “It’s really just saying, let’s look at each of these expenditures and say, is this actually in the best interest of the people?”

As the DOGE team continues its work across federal agencies, further cuts are expected. Trump has made it clear that his ultimate goal is to put Education Secretary Linda McMahon “out of a job” by dissolving the department entirely.

    Why this matters
The battle over ED is more than just a political skirmish — it’s a microcosm of the broader struggle between those who believe in limited government and fiscal responsibility and those who advocate for an expansive, activist federal bureaucracy. For decades, conservatives have argued that agencies like the Department of Education are not only wasteful but also serve as vehicles for progressive ideology.

With Trump and Musk leading the charge, this week’s events mark a significant step toward fulfilling a key conservative promise: shrinking the size and scope of government. As Speaker Johnson aptly put it, “Stay tuned, there is a lot more to come.”

For taxpayers weary of wasteful spending and bureaucratic overreach, that’s a promise worth celebrating.

When Elon says the US Gov't is running antiquated software, I can validate his claim.

Some months ago, I spoke with someone at our local Social Security Admin office. He said although they are running a web-based frontend system for users to interact with, the SSA backend (that holds all the data) is running decades old software. Although they have made repeated requests, Congress has NOT funded the needed software improvements.

Guess our Congress has been too busy giving millions of $$$$ for illegals to stay in fancy hotels for free (inc. meals), start businesses, and have new cars and medical care all on our dime.
