Due to the fact that many consider the Bikini Contest in the Miss World competition, which will be held in Indonesia this September, as being “offensive to the Muslim people”.
The organizers took the decision to cut this portion of the contest out after strong pressure from extremist groups, who also considered the swimsuit contest as being disrespectful.
According to the Associated Press though their source, Adjie
S. Soeratmadjie from RCTI (official broadcaster and local organizer of the event), contestants will have to ditch the swimsuits and instead wear traditional Balinese sarongs.
Julia Morley, president of the Miss World Organization, confirmed that they support the decision to remove the two-piece garment from the contest.
"I don't think Indonesia is the only country that has that culture. But we like to work in the manner respectful to every country, and I cannot see why when you go to somebody's country you should not behave respectfully," said Morley.
Interestingly, Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world.
