NEWARK, September 8 (UPI) — New Jersey's list of approved holidays for students has grown to 75 and now includes six religions.

The school year's first approved religious holiday begins Sept. 1, with the Islamic Day of Ascension, and runs through June 26, which is a Buddhist holiday, the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Friday.

"Each year we get a call that such and such holiday is based on the third rising of the moon, or things like that," says Isaac Bryant, deputy education commissioner. "It's been interesting, absolutely."

The practice of listing approved religious holidays dates to a 1951 law that prohibits schools from penalizing children who are absent for religious reasons.

This is just getting too outrageous! When will parents stand up, storm the school boards and demand a better education and stop this nonsense!
