NM reports first human case of bubonic plague

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico health officials have confirmed the year's first human case of bubonic plague.

The New Mexico Department of Health said Friday that a 58-year-old man from Santa Fe County was hospitalized with the plague and is recovering. Health officials say it is the first human case in the country in 2011.

Health officials say there have been three other cases confirmed in animals, two in dogs in Santa Fe County and one case in a cat in Rio Arriba County this spring.
