In this 14 April 2026 video, host Cash Jordan talks about how New York City is rolling out city run grocery stores. Will they be a hit or a miss?

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has officially announced plans to launch five city-run grocery stores—one in each borough—to combat rising food costs and improve access for low-income residents. Contrary to some headlines, these stores are not entirely “free”; rather, the city will subsidize a core set of staples to ensure essentials like bread and eggs are more affordable. The first store is slated to open at the La Marqueta site in East Harlem in 2027. The administration aims to have all five locations operational by the end of Mamdani’s term in 2029.

The stores will be built on city-owned land to eliminate rent and property tax costs. While the city sets the standards and pricing for core items, third-party operators will manage daily operations. The initial East Harlem project has an estimated price tag of $30 million.
