New York population growth buoyed by Asians

NEW YORK — Population growth at the outer edges of the New York City suburbs pushed the state to a slight population gain of 2.1%, according to Census Bureau data released Thursday.

Nearly 45% of new residents were in the six counties of Long Island and the lower Hudson River valley that surround New York City. Orange, Rockland, Dutchess and Suffolk counties, on the outer edge of the metro area, showed the strongest growth. The city of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County grew 9.6%, almost matching the national population growth rate of 9.7%.

New York City, where 42% of the state's residents live, also grew 2.1%, to nearly 8.2 million. Buffalo, the state's second-largest city and one plagued by years of industrial decline, lost nearly 11% of its population.

The strongest growth of all population groups was among Asians: the Asian population increased by nearly 36%, to 1.4 million or 7.3% of the state's residents.

The number of non-Hispanic white residents fell by more than 450,000 people to less than 60% of the population. That drop was made up for by an almost 550,000-person increase in the number of Hispanic residents.

Hispanics are the state's largest minority by a growing gap: an increase of more than 19% in the state's Hispanic population means that 15.5% of the state's residents are Hispanic, compared with 14.4% who are non-Hispanic black. Ten years ago, the two groups were closer: The state was 15.1% Hispanic and 14.8% non-Hispanic black.
