A Nicaraguan diplomatic official was found dead in a Bronx apartment with his throat slit, New York City police say.

Police said the 34-year-old man was found at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday by his driver, who had been scheduled to take him to the United Nations for the opening of the General Assembly's annual meeting.

Officials at the Nicaraguan Mission to the UN identified the man to Fox News as Cesar Mercado, the Central American country's New York ambassador to the United Nations.

Mercado's body was found in a sixth floor apartment believed to be his residence. The door was ajar and a knife was recovered at the scene.

There was no immediate word on a motive.

"The investigation is ongoing," a police source told FoxNews.com.
