Islam isn't any worse than Catholicism. It has taken centuries of war and strife to free Europe from Catholic tyranny. The peaceful and tolerant character of Christianity is a Protestant creation won and enforced by Protestant authority. The separation of church and state in the US was founded by Protestants to protect their own freedom to worship from other Protestants.

We cannot expect to subdue Islam the way that Catholicism has been subdued. Islam has completely walled itself off from reform or change, even if it were possible at all. And there is little in the foundations of Islam to suggest that it has the potential to reform or change.
