NRA Releases List of Celebrities, Organizations that Support Gun Control

NRA Releases List of Celebrities, Organizations that Support Gun Control

By Michael Allen, Mon, January 07, 2013

The National Rifle Association (NRA) recently released a list of gun control advocates.
According to the list, these people and companies have given money and/or support to gun control measures and/or organizations such as the Brady Act and the Clinton assault weapons ban, reports the Daily Mail.

According to the NRA, celebrities who believe in some sort of gun control in America (the most violent industrialized nation) include: Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, Dick Van Dyke, George Clooney and Lauren Bacall.

The NRA claims that these businesses support gun control in an effort to reduce deaths: National Spinal Cord Injury Association, the American Medical Association, Levi Strauss & Co., Hallmark Cards, Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, Ben & Jerry`s and the American Association of Retired Persons.

The NRA also listed the Episcopal Church-Washington Office, Kansas City Royals baseball team, Gannet Publications, the New York Times and Motorcycle Cruiser Magazine.

Box Office Report: 'Warm Bodies' No. 1 With $20 Mil; Sylvester Stallone's 'Bullet to the Head' Bombs

8:50 AM PST 2/3/2013 by Pamela McClintock

UPDATED: The Stallone action pic debuts to a paltry $4.5 million, coming in No. 6 and helping to drive down Super Bowl weekend grosses; "Silver Linings Playbook" and other best picture Oscar contenders continue to shine.

Summit Entertainment's Warm Bodies -- a new spin on the zombie genre -- topped the weekend box office with a solid $20 million debut thanks to younger females, while Sylvester Stallone's new action pic Bullet to the Head turned in a grim $4.5 million.

Despite Warm Bodies, overall box office grosses were down 26 percent from last year's Super Bowl weekend, when Chronicledebuted to $22 million and The Woman in Black bowed to $20.9 million.

Warm Bodies -- billed as a paranormal romantic comedy -- starsNicholas Hoult as a zombie who rescues a girl (Teresa Palmer) from imminent death at the hands of his fellow undead. An unlikely romance develops, setting off an unforeseen chain of events.

The film hit its target demo of younger females - the group least interested in the Super Bowl. Women and girls made up 60 percent of the audience, while 65 percent of those buying tickets were younger than 25. The movie received a B+ CinemaScore.

"It was a perfect storm. The material was unique -- we're even joking it's the biggest 'rom com zom' in history," said Lionsgate executive vice president of distribution David Spitz. "We made a conscious decision to sell this as a romantic comedy, versus as a zombie pic, and it paid off. Our marketing was amazing."

Jonathan Levine directed Warm Bodies, based on the popular young-adult book by Isaac Marion(Summit, of course, is the studio that adapted Stephenie Meyer'sblockbuster YA Twilightseries).

Paramount's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters came in No. 2 in its second weekend, falling a relatively narrow 44 percent to $9.2 million and putting its domestic total at $34.5 million.

Oscar best picture contender Silver Linings Playbook continued to wow, coming in No. 3 in its 12th week of release with $8.1 million, down only 14 percent from the previous weekend. The Weinstein Co. film has earned $80.4 million domestically and is now virtually assured of hitting $100 million in North America.

Silver Linings isn't the only best picture nominee continuing to prosper at the box office. Zero Dark Thirty grossed $5.2 million for the weekend to place No. 5 and push its domestic total to $77.8 million.Django Unchained, Lincoln and Les Miserables remain in the top 10 as well, with Lincoln jumping the $170 million mark.

Bullet to the Head skewed notably older, with 81 percent of the audience over 25. It's the third R-rated action movie in a row to tank, after The Last Stand and Parker, and the pic is certain to suffer on Sunday because of the Super Bowl.

Produced and financed by Joel Silver'sDark Castle Entertainment and IM Global/Reliance, Bullet to the Head is based on the French graphic novel Du plomb dans la tete. It stars Stallone as a hitman who teams up with a young Washington, D.C., detective (Sung Kang) to track down a team of ruthless criminals behind two murders that brought them together in the first place. Warner Bros. is releasing the movie domestically per its deal with Dark Castle.

Soft in its limited debut was the crime comedy Stand Up Guys, starring Al Pacino, ChristopherWalken and Alan Arkin. The movie, from Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, grossed $1.5 million from 659 theaters for a location average of $2,276. In the film, Pacino's character is reunited with his old partner in crime after serving 28 years in prison, only to find that his partner has his own ax to grind.

Sony Pictures Classics' The Gatekeepers, about Israel's secretive internal security service, posted the top location average of the weekend, opening to $66,777 from three theaters for a theater average of $22,226.
Here are the full results for the weekend of Feb. 1-3 at the domestic box office:

Harvey Weinstein On NRA Takedown Project: 'They're Gonna Wish They Weren't Alive'

As the producer dishes on Anne Hathaway's Judy Garland biopic, he gives details on his NRA project with Meryl Streep.

    By Sophie Schillaci

Amid a full-steam awards campaign for "August: Osage County," Hollywood super producer Harvey Weinstein dropped a bombshell or two on Howard Stern's Sirius XM radio show Wednesday (January 15.)
While we already knew that Weinstein had tapped Anne Hathaway to play Judy Garland in the upcoming biopic, "Get Happy," the mogul (though he's reluctant to accept the title) revealed that production will likely begin this summer.

"There's no testing," Weinstein said of casting Hathaway for the role. "She sung like Judy Garland for me, she sings beautifully, she has that look ... I think that'll be a good movie."

But the real jaw-dropper came near the end of Weinstein's hour-long interview, in which he revealed that he and Meryl Streep are collaborating on what sounds a lot like an NRA takedown project.

Weinstein found himself on a tangent about why he hates guns, admitting that, "I don't think we need guns in this country and I hate it, and I think that the NRA is a disaster area." Then, after acknowledging that he "shouldn't say this," Weinstein revealed details about his next collaboration with his "August: Osage County" star.

"I'm gonna make a movie with Meryl Streep and we're gonna take this issue head on," he said. "They're gonna wish they weren't alive after I'm done with them."

Likening the project to the 1939 film "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," Weinstein predicts that gun stocks will "crash and burn" after the film's release.

Among the other topics discussed (including, at great length, Stern's affections for Weinstein's wife, Marchesa co-founder Georgina Chapman), the 61-year-old father of five expanded on his plans to direct an adaptation of the Warsaw uprising story "Mila 18."

"It took me 20 years to track this down and get it," he said of the film rights to Leon Uris' classic book. "I've gotta do this one. This has bugged me my whole life. This has been a project I've searched for ever since my aunt gave me the book when I was a boy. It's an important story to tell."

    Sources: Clinton supporter pressures Pelosi

    • STORY HIGHLIGHTS
    • Media mogul Harvey Weinstein is a major Hillary Clinton supporter
    • Weinstein proposed plan to fund revotes in Michigan, Florida
    • Sources say he threatened to cut off funds to congressional Dems
    • Weinstein denies making any threats

    By Ed Henry
    CNN White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Hillary Clinton supporter Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut off contributions to congressional Democrats unless House Speaker Nancy Pelosi embraced his plan to finance revotes in Florida and Michigan, three officials familiar with their conversation said.

Sources say Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut contributions to congressional Democrats.

Weinstein and Pelosi talked on the phone late last month, the sources said.

The three officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the conversation.

They said Weinstein, a top supporter of Clinton's presidential campaign, appeared determined to buy Clinton more time in her battle against Sen.Barack Obama by pushing for the revote. He was also pressing Pelosi to back off her previous comments that superdelegates should support the candidate who's leading in pledged delegates in early June, the sources said.

Weinstein, a co-founder of Miramax Films who now runs the Weinstein Company, called CNN Thursday to vehemently deny that he issued any threats. "Never, ever was the thought about denying funding to Democrats," he said.

Weinstein said the phone call focused on his offer to put together a team of people to help finance a revote in Florida and Michigan. "I told her people felt there would be a disenfranchisement of voters" unless Democrats came up with a remedy, he said. Watch a report on the Pelosi-Weinstein conversation »

Another person familiar with the phone call said what might have upset Pelosi is that Weinstein also suggested that if Democratic leaders "did not fix" the Florida and Michigan problem, powerful Democrats may abandon the eventual party nominee in favor of Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, in November.

But the three officials briefed on the call insisted Weinstein went further by suggesting that if Pelosi did not consider his proposal on the revote, he would help slow the flow of donations to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which works to elect House Democrats.

"He was trying to get [Pelosi] to promise not to shut the race down," said one of the officials familiar with the call, which came before the primaries in Indiana and North Carolina.

But Pelosi, who has repeatedly insisted she is neutral in the presidential showdown, refused to meet Weinstein's demands.

"She said, 'Don't ever threaten me again,'" said a second official familiar with the heated conversation.

Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami would not characterize the phone call to CNN, saying only: "This was a private conversation, one of many the speaker has about the presidential campaign."

The possibility of a revote in the delegate-rich states of Florida and Michigan is a critical issue because it may be Clinton's last chance to catch up to Obama in the delegate count.

Currently, Obama has 1,845 pledged delegates to Clinton's 1,686.
The tense confrontation between Pelosi and Weinstein is raising private concerns among some Democrats that tensions run so deep that it may be difficult to heal the party's wounds when the primary season is scheduled to end in early June.

Pelosi's decision to refuse to sign on to Weinstein's proposal for revotes in Florida and Michigan -- which were stripped of their delegates by the Democratic National Committee for moving up their primary dates -- is likely to further irk Clinton allies who have charged that the speaker has been tilting her support to Obama.

A superdelegate herself, Pelosi angered the Clinton camp in March by saying that superdelegates should back the candidate who leads in the pledged delegate count by early June.

Clinton allies saw that as favoring Obama, who has been leading in the pledged delegate count. Pelosi has stressed she is only concerned it will be a problem for the Democratic party as a whole if superdelegates are perceived to have overturned the will of the people by backing a candidate who is behind in pledged delegates.

In March, 20 Clinton fundraisers scolded the speaker in a letter for her remarks on the superdelegate issue, hinting they might hold back funds for the DCCC if Pelosi did not allay their concerns. Weinstein was not among the fundraisers who signed the letter.

"We have been strong supporters of the DCCC," the fundraisers wrote to Pelosi. "We therefore urge you to clarify your position on superdelegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the National Convention in August."
Pelosi did not back down then either, and Democratic party officials hardly seem scared by any of the threats. The DCCC reported more than $44 million in cash-on-hand recently, far outpacing its rival, the National Republican Congressional Committee.

While Weinstein is a prolific fundraiser for favored candidates like Clinton, he has not given much money out of his own pocket to the DCCC. His only contribution to the DCCC was a mere $2,000 in 1993, according to Federal Election Commission records, though he has given tens of thousands of dollars in personal money to Senate Democrats over the last decade. The mogul has also raised tens of millions of dollars for Democratic candidates from other donors.

Harvey Weinstein editing, releasing 'SEAL Team Six' to help President’s re-election bid?

    By Hollie McKay
    Published October 25, 2012FoxNews.com

    Facebook1600 Twitter329 LinkedIn8

LOS ANGELES – Set to air on the National Geographic Channel two days before the Presidential election, “SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden,” is billed as the “real inside story behind the manhunt and raid that took down al-Qaeda’s notorious leader, told through the eyes of the military and intelligence teams involved.”

But rather than focusing on the heroes who carried out the mission, President Obama now takes center stage in the film, with voice-overs, still photographs and archival footage being added after "SEAL Team Six" was purchased in May for a reported $2.5 million by Harvey Weinstein, a big supporter of the President.
Not only that, Meghan O’Hara – a producer for Obama supporter Michael Moore’s films “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Sicko” and “Bowling for Columbine” – was the one hired to gather that extra footage.

A report in the New York Times said the new footage serves to “strengthen Mr. Obama’s role and provide a window into decision-making in the White House,” a move the report says will “bolster claims that the 90-minute film amounts to a political stunt.”

Indeed FrontPageMag.com called it an “Obama Infomercial From Michael Moore’s Favorite Producer” which they say is essentially “about the man that sat on his ass while they (SEAL Team Six) risked their lives.”

But filmmaker John Stockwell denies the claims the film and its release timing are politically motivated, telling FoxNews.com that he and Weinstein “never discussed politics. He was just concerned with getting the details right.” But it seems some political aspects of the movie were too much for the National Geographic Channel, which had a scene depicting GOP nominee Mitt Romney appearing to oppose the raid removed from the final cut, the Times reports.
“We were trying to use news footage that gave some context as to who was in favor and who was against (the raid),” Stockwell explained, adding that the axed footage of Romney was from a 2007 primary, four years before the raid took place.

A rep for The National Geographic Channel told FoxNews.com that when they received the film, they asked to make some edits on things that “seemed a little out of context and that we felt wasn't appropriate.”

“We have a very stringent Standards and Practices department that reviews anything we put on our network, and that seemed out of context,” the rep said.
“SEAL Team Six” is not Weinstein’s first foray into pre-election political movies. He was the force behind Michael Moore’s anti-Bush film “Fahrenheit 9/11” prior to the 2004 election. He also held off on releasing political satire “Butter,” which depicts a Michele Bachmann-like GOP hopeful who pulls out all stops to win a butter-carving competition, until just a couple of weeks ago.

So far this election cycle Weinstein has given $5,000 to President Obama’s reelection campaign and $61,600 to the Democratic National Committee, which has coordinated fundraising with the Obama campaign. In August, he opened the doors of his Connecticut compound for a star-studded Obama fundraiser. The two are seemingly cyber buddies as well, with Weinstein joking earlier this year that he “turned down” a film pitch idea e-mailed to him from Obama.
Despite the film’s Nov. 4 release, National Geographic denies claims of vote swaying.

“The way the deal was presented to the network was Netflix has a window for the film November 5th and 6th. If we wanted the exclusive for the premiere, we had to air it before then. Obviously we are aware of the election happening and the proximity is not lost on us, but we think the topic of national security is certainty of interest to our viewers especially during an election year anyone that watches this film knows that this film is a film about American Heroes,” the rep said. “It is utterly ridiculous that a film on the National Geographic channel is going to affect the outcome of the election of the leader of the free world. We would not air it if we thought it was propaganda.”

    But not everyone is convinced.

“It's an apt metaphor for Hollywood that even the brave actions of SEAL Team Six get twisted into liberal themes and used to push a political message just before a close election. It's unfortunate but unsurprising that the issue of propaganda has taken the focus away from our amazing heroes,” noted Dan Gainor, VP of Business and Culture for the Media Research Center. “The timing of this film is absolutely ridiculous. For an Obama supporter to be releasing a ‘prObama’ film just before the election is a blatant attempt to sway voters. And liberals wonder why conservatives complain about Hollywood.”
