NEW YORK - The New York Police Department is investigating a truck abandoned several yards from a toll booth near the Manhattan side of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge.

Police say witnesses reported seeing a man flee the vehicle Wednesday night. A smell of gasoline was reported coming from the vehicle, which was described as a U-Haul or Ryder truck.

The bridge has been shut down to traffic. Emergency services officers along with the bomb Squad and the fire department are responding to the scene.

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge formerly was called the Triborough Bridge. It's a complex of spans connecting Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The RFK, also known as the Triborough Bridge, was shut down in both directions Wednesday night due to an abandoned rental truck.

Police say a UHaul truck with Arizona license plates on the Manhattan span of the bridge was found abandoned on the bridge around 10pm.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said a worker on the bridge that connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx found the vehicle apparently smelling of gas.

Police say the bomb squad and Hazmat teams cut a hole in the side of the moving van and found nothing inside.

The bridge was slowly beginning to reopen around 12:05am Thursday morning.

Officials plan to tow the vehicle away to fully examine it.

NYPD clears suspicious truck X-rayed at bridge

    Posted 3m ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Police Department says a truck abandoned several yards from a toll booth near the Manhattan side of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge is empty and isn't a threat.
The bridge has reopened for traffic after being closed briefly.

Police say witnesses had reported seeing a man flee the vehicle Wednesday night. A smell of gasoline was reported coming from the vehicle, which was described as a U-Haul or Ryder truck.

Police X-rayed the truck and cut a hole in the side to discover it was empty. They're looking to speak to the person who abandoned it.

Traffic on the bridge resumed around midnight.

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge formerly was called the Triborough Bridge. It's a complex of spans connecting Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
