Obama’s DoD Sets New ‘Number 1 Priority,’ It’s Probably Not What You’re Thinking

The Department of Defense has reportedly told its senior officers of a rather surprising shift in focus for the U.S. military, but the direction is certainly not what you’re thinking.
Western Journalism reports that Gen. Martin Dempsey said recently during a meeting, “The Department of Defense’s number one priority is combating Ebola.”
The directional change is surprising, considering that Pentagon officials are concerned that doing so would take away an already strained military from other missions, such as vital counter-terrorism planning and the threat from the Islamic State terrorist group, according to Fox News.
“We don’t need to be taking planners away from the CT [counterterrorism] mission, and that is what is going on,” a Defense Department source said.
According to the New York Times, the President is set to announce on Tuesday that the U.S. will commit up to 3,000 military personnel to be sent to Africa to take charge of containing the deadly virus.
Monday night, senior administration officials said the Department of Defense will open a joint command operation in Monrovia, Liberia to coordinate international efforts to combat the disease. The DoD is asking for an additional $500 million to supply troops and engineers to help construct more treatment facilities and train up to 500 health care workers a week to deal with the outbreak.
According to Fox, the DoD’s decision has support from some, who believe a rapid shift is needed to combat the deadly virus.
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., the senior Republican on the Senate’s health committee, said Monday that the U.S. must take the Ebola threat as seriously as it does the Islamic State terrorist group. He added that he would support the Obama administration’s request for $30 million for the CDC and $58 million for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority in an upcoming bill.
“This is an instance where we should be running toward the burning flames with our fireproof suits on,” Alexander said.
“This is an emergency. We need to recognize it, and we need to find and work with other countries in the world that recognize it,” he added.
On Monday, ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to address the risk from Ebola that could “set the countries of Africa back a generation.” She added it would be a rare occasion that the security council, which is responsible for international threats and security, would address a public health issue.
If not contained, Ebola could spread far beyond the borders of Africa and even reach America’s homeland. Some health experts have actually warned that the virus could possibly mutate to become airborne, which would make it much harder to combat and would cause it to spread like wildfire.
