Lead Sponsor Of Federal Gun Bill Has No Idea What A Magazine Is

Posted on April 5, 2013 by Philip Hodges

It’s really sad when a politician pretends to be so passionate about an issue which she has absolutely no knowledge of. And Colorado Congress(wo)man Diana DeGette from Colorado isn’t just some politician pretending to be passionate. She is the lead sponsor of a federal gun control bill that would ban high-capacity magazines.

She was asked how limiting rounds in magazines would help reduce violence. And from her comment, I don’t think Representative DeGette even knows what a magazine is:
“I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now, they’re going to shoot them. So if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time, because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available.”

Huh? So, gun magazines can’t be reused? Or is she saying that magazines are actually bullets? And she’s the lead Democratic sponsor of this bill? Maybe she should get together with Georgia Representative Hank Johnson in his effort to prevent Guam from capsizing due to overpopulation.

To make matters worse, DeGette’s spokes(wo)man Juliet Johnson tried to cover up the Representative’s ignorance on guns and in issuing her “correction” statement, she showed her own ignorance. Johnson said that DeGette “simply misspoke,” so she clarified what DeGette really meant:

“The congresswoman has been working on a high-capacity assault magazine ban for years and has been deeply involved in the issue; she simply misspoke in referring to ‘magazines’ when she should have referred to ‘clips,’ which cannot be reused because they don’t have a feeding mechanism.”
OK, so gun magazines aren’t bullets after all. They’re clips. She wants to ban high-capacity clips? Since when were clips ever an issue? And since when are clips not reusable? Or are we back at the whole “clips vs. magazines” confusion that is so common among gun-grabbers? No, Representative DeGette and Spokes(wo)man Johnson, magazines and clips aren’t the same thing.

It’s like the calculating villain Vizzini in The Princess Bride using the word “inconceivable” over and over again. Indigo Montoya finally observed, “That word you keep using; I don’t think it means what you think it means.”

More than likely, there wasn’t any misspeaking on DeGette’s part. I think she just has no idea what she’s talking about.
