Obama Campaign Donor Funds Anti-Stimulus Effort

President Barack Obama's aggressive push for an unprecedented economic stimulus package may be costing him some of his vaunted grassroots appeal. One man in New Hampshire, who donated the maximum $2,300 to Obama's presidential campaign, is willing to put his money where his disappointment is.
Fred Tausch is a businessman who has voted Republican all his life. But he supported Obama over John McCain in November after he became "excited about his message." Now, Tausch is not excited about the proposed economic stimulus bill, and has organized a campaign against it with $100,000 of his own money. Tausch has bought full-page adds in several newspapers, radio commercial time, and has set up a website for his organization called STEWARD, or Stimulate the Economy Without Accumulating Record Debt. He says that the stimulus plan being pushed by the Administration is a bad idea.
"We're responding to a bad financial situation by borrowing a tremendous amount of money and spending it in a way that I don't think will help the economy very much."
Mr. Tausch's effort will likely have little impact in the stimulus debate on Capitol Hill. But his frustration with President Obama underscores the danger for Obama in his support for the stimulus. Obama won election in November partly on the strength of his appeal to middle-of-the-road voters like Tausch as a politician that transcended party affiliation. If he loses their support over the stimulus by appearing to be an ordinary liberal Democrat, it could spell trouble for Democrats in the mid-term elections, not to mention Obama's own reelection campaign. There is no way of knowing how many Obama voters there are like Tausch there are. But with polls showing support for Obama's stimulus plan cratering, it's a good bet that there are many more than President Obama would like.
