Obama campaigning on new $1.1M bus purchased by the Secret Service

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is traveling the Midwest on a new $1.1 million bus purchased by the Secret Service, an impenetrable-looking conveyance the size of a cross-country Greyhound, painted all in black, with dark tinted windows and flashing red and blue lights.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan emphasized that the bus wasn't purchased solely for the president and would be used for other dignitaries in the future. He said the agency has not previously had buses in its fleet and was overdue to get some since it's had to protect politicians traveling by bus for decades.

In the past, the service has had to lease buses and retrofit them for that purpose.

Donovan said two buses were purchased and one is being used by Obama as he travels through Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. Both will be used by other officeholders and candidates.

Donovan declined to comment on the buses' design or capability. He said the decision to purchase the buses was made about a year ago but had been under discussion longer, and that the money was taken from a fund for transportation and armored vehicles.

President Barack Obama began a bus tour of the Midwestern United States to combat Republican assertions that have arisen from the first series of GOP debates, The Washington Times reported. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/201 ... pposition/

The President launched the tour in an effort to counter fears Americans have about the current state of the economy. Obama told the crowd that the debt debacle and several other problems facing the economy were caused by a lack of help from Republicans in Congress, according to the newspaper.

“I put a deal before the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, that would have solved this problem,â€

CHICAGO (WLS) - Two leading Republican figures joined WLS Radio's Don Wade and Roma Show Wednesday morning where they talked about President Barack Obama's bus tour through western Illinois.

GOP national chairman Reince Priebus called it the "debt-end bus tour."

"There's a taxpayer paid campaign type event to create buzz and to create positive vibes for the president, paid for by the taxpayers and we're calling him out on it," Priebus said.

Also on with Don and Roma, Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock (R-18th), who reacted to news that Obama's two buses, worth about $1.1 million each, were built in Canada.

"Well, I guess he not only likes Canadian health care, but he likes Canadian RV's," Schock said.

Schock called the purchase of the two motorcoaches "more liberal duplicity," saying Obama is the same president who included a Made in America provision in his stimulus bill.

Schock slammed Obama for being out of touch with the average American his bus tour is meant to reach out to.

"It is the height of hypocrisy and, more importantly, it shows his disconnect between where the normal average ordinary American is, which is out of work. 9.2 percent unemployment and this guy has the audacity to go and spend $2 million of taxpayer money to buy two of these motorcoaches for a three day trip," Shock said.

The president is holding two town hall meetings Wednesday in the tiny towns of Atkinson and Alpha, Illinois. He'll then return to Washington for the start of a vacation.
