OBAMA PROMISES MOVEON.ORG: WE'LL RAISE TAXES
OBAMA PROMISES MOVEON.ORG: WE'LL RAISE TAXES
by BEN SHAPIRO 13 Nov 2012
President Obama held his unity meeting at the White House today over the fiscal cliff. Attendees ranged from John Podesta of the Center for American Progress to Bono; all were there to urge the president to stick by his guns on raising taxes.
And they weren’t disappointed. According to Justin Ruben, MoveOn.org’s political action executive director, “MoveOn’s 7 million members will be pleased to know that President Obama today strongly reiterated his steadfast commitment to ensuring that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent finally end December 31—and to protecting the middle class in the process.”
This is something new. During the campaign, President Obama promised that he would not increase taxes for those making beneath $250,000 per year. He reiterated that promise last week. But the top 2% of income earners include individuals earning more than $200,000. Obama’s bar is getting lower and lower. Those earning $200,000 are hardly millionaires. That’s a low-level lawyer at a major law firm. Or an average orthodontist.
But President Obama kept the MoveOn.org crowd happy. He’s not a uniter. He’s a divider. And his class warfare keeps getting more and more divisive, no matter how many songs he gets Bono to warble for him.

Last week, President Obama promised to bring people together from all sides to discuss what to do about the fiscal cliff. By all sides, he apparently meant unions, Hollywood, and wild left interest groups. Here’s the guest list today at the White House for a summit on what to do about the fiscal cliff:
Mary Kay Henry, SEIU; Lee Saunders, AFSCME; Dennis Van Roekel, NEA; Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO; Neera Tanden and John Podesta, Center for American Progress; Bob Greenstein, Center for Budget and Policy Priorities; Laura Burton Capps,ct; Common Purpose Proje Max Richtman, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare; Justin Ruben, MoveOn; and Deepak Bhargava, Center for Community Change.
Oh yes, and Bono.
Obama won the presidency in large part thanks to the efforts of unions, who turned out thousands of members to boost Obama’s ground game. And Hollywood chipped in, too, by consistently portraying Obama as a put-upon genius, and Mitt Romney as an out-of-touch elitist. And that’s not even mentioning the musicians who toured with Obama to help him fill his less-than-enthused stadiums.
Now Obama is making good on his promises to unions, and his promises to Hollywood. This is the crowd that defines the Obama administration. They always have. Obama just doesn’t care who sees it anymore.
