President Barack Obama is expected to spend Christmas in Hawaii, according to sources in Washington.

He is expected to arrive in Honolulu Dec. 23 and return Jan. 2, sources said.

Christmas in Hawaii has been an Obama tradition, although on previous trips home he visited his grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, who died November 2008.

Last year President-elect Obama returned to Honolulu and visited with troops as Kaneohe Marine Corps Base on Christmas Day.

The president, his family and guests rented a Kailua beach house for last year's Christmas vacation. On the day after Christmas, the Obamas were left in the dark after an electrical storm knocked out power to all of Oahu.

Obama was born in Honolulu and spent much of his childhood here.
