We just spread the river rock around the landscaping of the house...we are getting rid of all wood landscaping timbers and wood chips....we have a wooden fence next to the house and are thinking of replacing that part with chain link.

We live on an acre but it's on a hill, so a chain link shouldn't look too bad from the road.....hubby thinks it would look bad to put chain link connected to the rest of the wooden fence.

Just read the berries story.....I got a funny one too.

My Mom and Dad met when Mom was 4 yrs old and Dad was 9....they were friends forever, then started dating and married when mom was 20.

Mom was a small town girl, never going out on a farm. Dad's family were farmers.

He took mom out to one of the farms to go berry picking. Remember, she had never done this.

The both had baskets.....when Mom returned she had a basket full of animal droppings!

I don't know how old she was at this time....but she clearly needed to get out more!!

Dad said, "Hon, you have a basket full of crap!"

After we were born, we went to the farms every Sunday after church...guess Dad wanted us to know the difference between berries and droppings!

    crazybird,

You'd be surprised what dogs like.

For example, we found our dogs also like berries, bananas, carrots, coffee, 3 (we have 4) of them like alcoholic drinks.

Don't worry, with the coffee and alcohol, we dip our finger into a cup and let them lick our finger, we don't let them have anymore than that.

Needless to say, I can only grow herbs because the dogs don't bother those.

    TIDBITS OF KNOWLEDGE AND FUN:

I have seen dogs eat onion, and avocado. Avocado with the oil makes a dog coat beautiful.

My niece was telling me to use DAWN dish detergent for my dogs fleas. It is working. I truly have tried everything.

My apple tree limbs are so loads they are bowing downward to the ground.

And a squirrel just yesterday had a large peach going up the big oak and boy he was having a hard time traveling with the peach a fourth his size.

CRAZYBIRD: CONGRATS ON YOUR GARDEN. DONT WORRY THAT EVERTHING DID NOT GROW. TRY AGAIN. I HAD TO TRY SOME THINGS TWO OR THREE TIMES TILL I GOT IT RIGHT. PLANTS ARE LIKE PEOPLE AND THEY NEED JUST THE RIGHT LIGHT AND WATER. YOU WILL GET USE TO IT IF YOU KEEP TRYING. DONT GIVE UP!!!!

BEARPAW: IN REALLY HOT WEATHER YOU CAN SHADE YOUR PLANTS. USE SOME SKINNY STICKS TO FORM A TEEPEE. TIE THE STICKS AT THE TOP. THROW AN OLD DISHTOWEL OR CLEAN RAG ON THE TEEPEE TOP TO SHADE THE PLANT. OR YOU CAN USE PIECES OF FLOUR SACKING. YOU CAN USE ANYTHING REALLY. DONT USE PLASTIC CUZ THE PLANT HAS TO BREATHE. WHITE MATERIAL IS THE BEST BECAUSE THE PLANT WILL GET MORE LIGHT THROUGH IT. THICK MATERIAL WONT WORK BECAUSE IT IS TOO MUCH SHADE.

Lots of wise people getting back to the basics . I see lots of people now at farmers little local markets and the buy local business is booming now .

I know about gardening in a drought, it can be rough. Used dish water, washing machine water and lots of mulch . This state was on fire for 3 years .

We just ordered some more chickens . We learned alot the hard way about chickens . Always build pen ,brooder ,and set up 'before' they come . We had biddies in a big fish pond in out living room, ducklings in a big box . We didn't know they would freeze to death in 70 degrees without a hen to keep them warm .
