'Only' 1,067 vehicles set ablaze on New Year’s Eve in France

The much lamented tradition of torching cars to mark the arrival of the new year claimed more than 10 per cent fewer vehicles this year

By French standards, it was a peaceful New Year’s Eve.

Only 1,067 cars and vans were destroyed by arson, a “significant” reduction of more than 10 per cent compared to the number of vehicles set ablaze last year, according to Manuel Valls, the Interior Minister.

All things considered, it was a “positive result”, Mr Valls told a press conference on Wednesday. He said he regretted the deaths of three people in knife attacks in Paris and in eastern and southern France.

Car-torching has been adopted as a modern New Year tradition by some young revellers in France. The practice reportedly began in earnest amongst youths - often in poor neighbourhoods - in the 1990s in the region around Strasbourg in the east of the country.

Last year 1,193 vehicles were burned, according to official figures.

Cars torched outside U.S. consulate in Tijuana: FBI

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mexican authorities are investigating who started a fire outside the U.S. consulate in Tijuana that destroyed four cars, a U.S. official said on Friday.

The official said that another vehicle was partially damaged. There were no reported injuries. Local media reported the fire took place early Friday morning.

The U.S. consulate in Tijuana, located across the border from San Diego, is one of the busiest in Mexico. A U.S. consulate worker in the border city of Juarez was killed by drug gang gunmen in 2010.

Poor youths are torching their cars? Oh wait, no they're torching someone else's cas?! And this is "reveling"? Poor France. They've lost their minds. Fear does that to people, so they just surrender and say "okay" "let kids be kids". I wonder what kids? Whose kids? Who is raising kids to torch vehicles?

They better not ever come here. You torch an American's Car, just remember we're the country that hanged horse thieves.
