Oregon's Hispanic population grew five times as fast as the rest of the state's population in the past 10 years, according to 2010 Census data released Wednesday.

The overall Hispanic population grew 63% since 2000, adding 174,748 for a total of 450,062.

"This is really a national trend," said Charles Rynerson, a research faculty member of the Population Research Center. "Oregon ranks relatively high as a destination for people from Mexico … but the Latino population is really growing everywhere."

The state's total population grew 12% to 3,831,074. That was the state's second-lowest rate since the 1910 Census.

The state's non-Hispanic white population grew by 5%, but the percentage of the state's population that group represents declined from 83% in 2000 to 78%.

Some of the biggest percentage increases came in central Oregon. Deschutes County grew 36%. Bend was the second-fastest growing city behind Portland, adding 24,610 people.

Portland grew 10.3% to 583,776, while Eugene continued to outpace Salem as the state's second-largest city. Eugene grew 13.3% to 156,185 while Salem grew 12.9% to 154,637.

"I was eager to see what the results of that would be because they've been so close," Rynerson said. "Salem's population is a little more diverse than Eugene's, so they've had more growth in the Latino population, and Salem's public sector employment hasn't been hurt as bad."

so somebody reports this growth but WHY is the Hispanic population exploding, WHY? Bc we are being invaded by illegal Hispanics! That's why? And the media treats this information about Hispanic growth as something that is inevitable, like our destiny as Americans is to be recast as a nation!
